Walk the Walk: Day Four - Madison to Culpeper, Virginia

"The old is dying and the new is struggling to be born. Now is the time for monsters.” Antonio Gramsci, an Italian philosopher imprisoned by the fascist regime, wrote about what happens when the old order refuses to give up power and unearned privilege. The way those who fear they are losing everything unleash all possible havoc while they still have a chance. Reconstruction and Jim Crow. The end of apartheid in South Africa. And now.

Now is the time for monsters. We saw our share of monsters on our 17-mile trek today.* And we learned - from the security detail for this team - that there was more behind the scenes that we'll never know. The monsters loom large - the president, the alt-right, those afraid that they are being replaced. And the new - it is struggling, but it will be born.

My faith calls me to stand with those who suffer. My faith calls me to hear and speak a liberating word, and stand in a stream of prophets who, knowing the Realm of God was within and among them, spoke truth to power. My faith calls me to repent - to repent of the ways in which I have not seen what was right before me. To repent of the ways in which I did not understand the relationship between my own successes and opportunities were connected to my unearned privilege. To repent - "to turn around.” I do this with others - in community. It is what gives me hope.

I give thanks for this community of faith and the ways in people in our church are showing up - for each other, for the world, and for themselves.

Now is the time for monsters. But the new is being born. Can't you hear it? Can't you see it? Can't you just imagine it? What does it look like from where you stand?

*I am participating in a nine-day, 140 mile walk from Charlottesville, Virginia to Washington, DC as part of the national “Walk the Walk” pilgrimage of white faith leaders to RECKON with the anti-Blackness that permeates our past and present as a nation and as faith institutions, RESOLVE to advance racial justice in our faith traditions and nation, and REFRAME the faith narrative in this nation. This is co-organized by Faith in Action, the national network of POWER Interfaith, of which our congregation is a part. More here at https://walkthewalk2020.us/
