We are preparing to start a three-week study on Brene Brown's book, Rising Strong. The study will meet on 1/31, 2/7, and 2/14.

Our stories of struggle can be big ones, Brown writes, like the loss of a job or the end of a relationship; or they can be smaller ones, like a conflict with a friend or colleague. Regardless of magnitude or circumstance, Brown contends, the “rising strong” process is the same: We reckon with our emotions and get curious about what we’re feeling; we rumble with our stories until we get to a place of truth; and we live this process every day until it becomes a practice and creates nothing short of a revolution in our lives.

Rising strong after a fall, Brown writes, is how we cultivate wholeheartedness. It’s the process that teaches us the most about who we are.

Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past 12 years studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.

We’ll break up the reading into three parts for our series -- don’t worry, you don’t need to be present for all three weeks to participate (though I’d strongly encourage it).

  • Week 1 (January 31): Discuss pp. 3 - 98
  • Week 2 (February 7): Discuss pp. 99 - 184
  • Week 3 (February 14): Discuss pp. 185 - 268

Childcare will be available.
